Can Protein Supplement Cause Erectile Dysfunction
Men are darn serious about building well-sculpted bodies. But, they know that they won’t achieve it by pumping rods and lifting weights. Thus, they opt for supplements to get a perfect pile of muscle and mass. If you are one of them and are galloping towards a bigger and better body by relying on workout enhancers, do you know how enhancers actually work? Can work enhancers or protein supplements cause Erectile Dysfunction?
Don’t get scandalized! We don’t mean that by having supplements, you could trade muscle build up for erection. In fact, a few workout enhancers that are loaded with amino acids and protein-rich vitamins, are very helpful during the workout and are not harmful at all. The category of supplements that can cause a considerable problem belong to the “pre-workout” category; as they load the body with creatine and caffeine.
Anything in excess is a threat to the body. And both creatine and caffeine have been found to cause erection issues. These are stimulants which can cause problems with the heart and blood flow, causing the penis to struggle to receive necessary blood for an erection.
But, before we conclude let’s first understand what is erectile dysfunction, its causes, and the preventive measures.
Erectile dysfunction was never spoken about until the Ayushmann Khurrana starrer Bollywood movie Shubh Mangalam Savdhan. This is a common problem faced by about 40% of 40-year-old men, and when men reach the age of 70, the number soars to 70%.
What is Erectile Dysfunction?
Erectile Dysfunction can be defined as the inability to get an erection or maintain it long enough for sexual intercourse. Erections occur when nitric oxide (NO2) triggers a chemical process in which the penis arteries widen, enabling blood to fill quickly in them. In case of Erectile Dysfunction or ED, an enzyme interferes with dilation of these penis arteries.
What Causes ED?
Well, there are no reliable sources that state for sure that a specific protein supplement can cause Erectile Dysfunction, but a few ingredients in these supplements do have the potential for causing this dysfunction. In one of the sources, it is stated that excessive weight training paired with insufficient nutrition especially poor formulations of whey protein and omitting vitamin A, can minimize the body’s ability to produce testosterone and thus reduce erectile function.
